After earning her computer science degree at Otago, Jane took a job in Wellington with Sequel Software, a consultancy that specialises in Oracle databases. After 16 months with Sequel and a brief stint with the Ministry of Education, Jane became an analyst for Kiwibank and describes her working environment there as "exhilarating and rewarding". Subsequently Jane moved back to Dunedin and became staff researcher for AbacusBio, an agribusiness consultancy. She writes: "My job is very varied because I get bits of work from all the scientists as they need help with things, plus I do media and literature reviews, IP/patent searches, website maintenance and also I'm the BioSouth facilitator and NZBio regional co-ordinator. I'm loving it so far -- it's a great environment with really interesting people and none of the status hierarchy that gets so tiresome in larger organisations. Plus it's brilliant for someone as curious as me because I get to learn all sorts of fascinating facts about farming (I'm serious!!)."
