Alicia first worked as an organic chemist before re-training in computer science at Otago by doing a Diploma for Graduates. She then picked up some industry experience working as a programmer for Datacom in Auckland. (Datacom is one of New Zealand's largest IT services companies, with offices in Australia and Kuala Lumpur.) Alicia's partner works for Natural History New Zealand in Dunedin, and so in due course she found herself back in Dunedin, where she is now pursuing PhD research on emotions in artificial intelligence simulations.
