Title:

VISUAL THINKING
Optical Illusions and Road Accidents

Location:

Owheo G34 - 1:00 pm, Friday 09 October

Abstract:

Thinking in pictures enables us to solve many problems. Maps and diagrams in 2D seem to help us to reason. But most people simply stop thinking when confronted with a 3D problem.

Understanding the reason for this leads us to link certain optical illusions to the cause of accidents. I explain the history of this discovery including a new illusion discovered only last year.

On the way, I will demonstrate some illusions.

Bring pencil, paper and an open mind.

Following the custom of our end-of-year seminar, heckling will be rewarded.
