David Parry Teaching Fellow in Health Informatics Is the medium the message? Teaching Health Informatics over the Internet Abstract: There is increasing demand for teaching in Health Informatics from all sectors of the healthcare community. We are producing a postgraduate diploma in Health Informatics, to be offered as a distance learning course from the second semester. Otago University, the Wellington CHE and the NZ Health department have collaborated to provide support for this project. For each semester a CD-ROM is being produced with the core course material . At the same time a large website provides additional course materials, as well as hyperlinks to relevant WWW pages, along with student and staff home pages We intend using Internet conferencing tools (including audio) for interaction with the 30-40 students along with e-mail and newsgroups. The WWW and the CD-ROM side have been designed to be mutually supporting so that there are hyperlinks on the CD-ROM that point to areas on the website and vice versa. The presentation will deal with the technical and educational problems we have encountered and (with luck) surmounted, as well as an introduction to what health informatics is, or might be.
