Title:

Foundations of Sand? Implications of Neural Network Models of Memory

Location:

Archway 2

Abstract:

If artificial neural networks are a useful computational model of human information processing, then their properties make some interesting predictions about the nature of memory. I will start off by reviewing some of the basic background on neural networks and memory. I will then describe some of my own research relating to the "catastrophic forgetting" problem, and various predictions arising from it. I will claim that human memory rests on dynamic foundations that are constantly changing and adapting to accommodate new learning.
