Mining Decision-Making Processes in Open Source Software Development — A Study of Python Enhancement Proposals (PEPs) using Email Repositories

The success of an open source software development (OSSD) community is often attributed to the underlying governance model, and a key component of these models is the decision-making (DM) process. While there have been studies on the decision-making processes publicised by OSS communities (e.g., through published process diagrams), little has been done to study decision-making processes that can be extracted using a bottom-up, data-driven approach, which can then be used to assess whether the publicised processes conform to the extracted processes. We therefore undertook a large-scale data-driven study to understand how decisions are made in the Python community using Python Enhancement Proposals (PEPs), which embody decisions made during the evolution of the language. Our main contributions are: (a) the design and development of a framework to analyse the Python email archives (about 1.5 million emails), and (b) the extraction of decision-making processes that reveal activities that are neither explicitly mentioned in Python community documentation nor identified in prior research work.
Dr Nigel Stanger teaches at 200, 300, and 400 level, covering topics such as database design, management and administration, relational and object / relational database systems, distributed data management, and data warehousing. His research interests include digital preservation, digital repositories, data management of all kinds, data model translation, data integration, physical database design and database performance, and information visualisation.
