Title:

Digital Apollo -- The development of the Apollo Guidance Computer

Location:

Archway 2 - 1:00 pm, Friday 13 October

Abstract:

Between 1961 and 1972, the Instrumentation Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology designed and manufactured the guidance and navigation computer that successfully put man on the moon. This talk outlines both hardware and software development in that project, discussing some of the key lessons learned in both fields. I also discuss doing the technical history of a major project in collaboration with the original engineers and scientists, with particular reference to the re-creation of technical communities as archival sources for the historian.
