Title:

Mining for Memories: Building a Community Heritage Repository

Location:

Archway 2 - 1:00 pm, Friday 9 March

Abstract:

In May 2006, after an approach from Cardrona community leaders, a team from the School of Business created an EPrints-based heritage repository for the Cardrona community: the Cardrona Online Museum. The goals of the project were to provide a way to digitally preserve and make more widely available heritage material from the surrounding area. In December 2006 the community invited us to attend a Vintage Fair at Cardrona, with the aims of introducing the Museum to the wider community and showing what it could do. We also hoped to acquire new content on the day, rather like an "antique documents roadshow".

We really had no idea of what we might be getting ourselves into or what might happen on the day. This seminar will cover the Cardrona Online Museum, our preparations and expectations for the Vintage Fair, what actually happened on the day, what we learned from the exercise, and possible future directions. All this plus lashings of rabbit stew, hairy Scots miners, crossover cables and more Scurrs than you can shake a stick at.
