Title:

The effect of non-verbal cues in video-mediated remote communication (VMC) on social presence, task performance, trust, and satisfaction

Location:

Archway 2 - 1:00 pm, Friday 9 May

Abstract:

This talk will describe an experiment conducted for the presenter's PhD. A brief qualitative study led me to believe that there might be a link between non-verbal cues and subsequent trust between conversation partners in VMC. An experiment was then designed to empirically examine the effect of receiving body language information in VMC. Participants saw either a restricted view that is more traditional, which included just their partner's head and shoulders, or an unrestricted view which showed their partner from the waist up. I will discuss the effect of non-verbal cues on social presence, task performance, trust in participants' partners, and satisfaction with task performance and process.
