Undergraduate StudyComputer Science is a major subject for both the Bachelor of Science(BSc) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees at Otago University. There arealso honours courses in both degrees. The papers which directly relateto graphics and vision are normally taken in the third year of a degree, and in the fourth year of an honours course. These papers are:
An introductory course in computer graphics and image processing. Topicscovered include filtering, aliasing, two and three dimensional transformations,three-dimensional modelling and visualisation, colour theory and ray-tracing. This course covers image processing and computer vision. The image processingcomponent includes restoration of images, Fourier analysis, and image compression. The vision part covers stereopsis, feature detection, optical flow andshape from shading.
A more advanced course that follows on from COSC342, covering many ofthe same topics but in more depth. Assignments for this course includeusing Mirage, a ray-tracer developed in the graphics lab, to produce ashort animation
All 400-level students should do a project. University-wide standardisation of 4th-year workloads means that from 2002 on there are two 400-level projects, and you should enrol in one of them. You do not have a choice. The papers involve a piece of research under the supervision of one or more staff members.Topics change from year to year, but are usually related to the group'sgeneral research interests, or to recent advances in graphics and vision. COSC 490 is a 16-point 'paper' for Honours students only COSC 480 is an 8-point 'paper' for everyone except Honours students. Masters and PGDip students should do COSC 480. |
