The Robin Hood Bay Experimental Garden

Robin Hood Bay is situated to the south of Port Underwood, on the east coast of the South Island, south of the Marlborough Sounds on the property of Richard Gill. There is a well known series of stone walls in the Bay, and these are relics of pre-European Maori kumara gardens. This was was the reason why the area was chosen for this experiment.

An area of 5 x 5 m was laid out and steel waretas used for a fence, with wire netting to keep out stock and possums. Wind cloth was fastened to this to reduce wind damage. The garden was planted with carefully selected seed tubers in a quincunx pattern.

So far we have planted and harvested kumara for two seasons, and the experiment will continue for some years yet.
