I joined the department in April 1996 and work on various projects such as the creation of course workbooks, graduate surveys, report writing and some web pages. I have had a very varied career. After doing an MA in English and History I worked in local government, then had periods as a countryside ranger, a tour guide in the Scottish Highlands, and a long spell as an archaeologist in both Scotland and Ireland, including directing the first scientific excavation of an underground souterrain from 400BC. After that I switched to computing and had a spell as a programmer. I emigrated to New Zealand in 1993 with my family, which now includes three active boys.
