After completi ng a Bachelor's degree in Music at Otago, I went on to do a Dip.Sci. and Ph.D. in Computer Science. Since joining the academic staff in 1999, I have taught courses in compilers, theory, graphics, web development, software engineering, and databases. My research interests include data mining, neural networks, and trying to figure out how people learn to be good programmers.
Most of my research is on how to use the data we record to make better decisions. If we build predictive models, can we use the patterns we already know about to build them more quickly? Will they then be more accurate? If we rely on a large collection of opinions (such as music or movie ratings), do the opinions of people who disagree with us matter just as much as the rest?
