Travel Information for Dunedin

Dunedin international airport is about 25 km from the city. Car rentals are of course available, as are taxis (typically about $55 NZ) and airport shuttles (generally $15 NZ). There is no need to pre-book a shuttle seat.

Direct international flights to Dunedin are limited to infrequent arrivals from Australia. Generally, international travellers will enter New Zealand either at Auckland, or Christchurch. There are frequent direct flights from Christchurch to Dunedin, and flying time is under an hour. Most flights from Auckland to Dunedin involve stops or transfers in either Wellington or Christchurch, and occasionally both. There are, however, some direct flights, and it may well be worth checking with your travel agent whether connections to those flights are available.

Conference participants who intend to spend some time on the South Island sightseeing might want to consider renting a car in Christchurch. The drive from Christchurch to Dunedin is about 4.5 hours, and is quite scenic. Further, it is easy to plan an extended route back to Christchurch from Dunedin, taking in many of the South Island's features.

The A to Z travel directory features detailed information about the region. Jason's New Zealand travel channel also includes information about southern New Zealand and other parts of the country.
