COSC480

Project

Welcome to COSC480

This is a 40 point full year paper.

All enquiries about the COSC480 should be sent to the co-ordinator at 400projectadmin@cs.otago.ac.nz.

There are two 400-level project papers offered in computer science: COSC480 (Project) and COSC490 (Research Project). Which paper you should take depends on which degree you are studying towards:

  • If you are enrolled in an Honours degree you must take COSC490.
  • If you are enrolled in the first year of a two-year Masters degree, you should take COSC480.
  • If you are enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma, you don't have to take a project paper unless you want to proceed to a one-year Masters by thesis. If you do take a project paper then it should be COSC480.
  • If you are enrolled in a Masters of Applied Sciences (MAppSci), you don't have to take a 400-level project paper (although you must take APPS597). If you do decide to take a project paper it would normally be COSC480.

Project Guide and Project Choices

The 2017 project guide is now available. This contains useful information about the paper and assessment requirements.

A list of suggested project topics is now available. Past years' project lists are provided at the bottom of this page, but note that the list of projects offered changes from year to year. While we advise that you select a project from the list provided, it is also possible to suggest your own project, but you must find a member of staff who is willing to supervise the project. Potential supervisors will also be able to advise if your project idea is suitable in terms of scope and difficulty.

Note that for 2017 a number of staff are unavailable for supervision as they may be away for some or all of the year.

There is a lot of variety between projects, but for Masters students the project generally builds the foundation for their thesis research. As a result it may only produce partial or interim results. For Postgraduate Diploma students the project and associated report must be self-contained.
