Computer Science - General Career Paths

A mainstream career in the IT industry typically involves at least one of the following :-

  • software development
  • networks
  • databases
  • IT support

To be attractive to employers as a software developer, you should build on the core programming papers by including at least :-

  • COSC345 (software engineering)
  • COSC346 (object-oriented programming)

To build up a specialisation in networks, you should build on COSC244 by including at least TELE301 and possibly also INFO333 and TELE402.

To build your skills in databases, COSC344 will suffice for most purposes, but COSC430 will give you useful practical experience and introduce you to data-mining.

An IT support role typically means helping users to sort out problems, and so you need to be a jack of all trades who likes people. You're certain to need web development skills (COMP112 and COSC212).

An understanding of financial systems is also recommended, for which BSNS107 gives a good background.
