Computer Science (COSC) can be an Honours subject for BSc Hons or BA Hons. An Honours degree in computer science at Otago is an integrated four year degree for students who are able to cope with a demanding programme.
Entry to the programme is by application after the first year, or after the second year, or after the third year. For entry to second year Honours, you need 126 points including COMP160, BSNS106, and MATH160, enough Science points, and satisfactory grades. For entry to third year Honours, you need 252 points with six papers at 200-level and satisfactory grades. For entry to fourth year Honours you need to have done the equivalent of third year Honours, 378 points, and satisfactory grades.
Honours students are expected to take supporting subjects at the same level as their COSC papers, so that a second year Honours student will take subjects at 200-level and a third year Honours student will take subjects at 300-level. The fourth year of Honours is really part of the postgraduate programme, because it involves six 400-level papers chosen from among COSC410 - 470 or TELE402 (18 points each), plus the COSC480 research project (36 points).
If you are considering Honours, your first step should be to consult the adviser of studies.
